The Center for Archaeological Operations was created in 1977,
and had been concerned with the study of the archaeological heritage and the development of techniques
for the preservation of such sites and antiquities.
On the campus of Kyoto University, and in its subsidiary areas throughout the country, there are many sites of interest, including
the Kitashirakawa Jomon site, the Nogakubu Jomon site,
the Jomon cemetery at the Botanical Gardens,
the Shirakawa Kitadono site of the later Heian period,
and Jomon and Yayoi sites at the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory.
For the study of these sites and finds, the Center accepted cooperation from related sciences:
archaeology, architecture, geography, geology, anthropology, and chemical and atomic sciences.
The Center carries out excavations, trench soundings, and other operations on these sites.
In 2008, the Center was succeeded in the mission by Center for Cultural Heritage Studies of Kyoto University.
On 1st April 2019, Center for Studies of Cultural Heritage and Inter Humanities (CESCHI) was newly established,
and its Section of Archaeological Heritage Management for KU
in turn succeeded to the mission of Center for Cultural Heritage Studies.
