Contents | In the "Shoku Nihongi," Dōkagami, who was promoted by Emperor Shōtoku, is portrayed critically, but there remains a "decree" that describes the emperor's orders, which is close to his real voice. It suggests that Shomotoku, as the son of Emperor Shomu, was intensely proud of his own lineage. The twist and turn of the Fujiwara-no-Nakamaro rebellion concentrated despotic power in Shomotoku's hands. Professor Yoshikawa points out that Dōkagami's exceptional rise to power is a sign of this, and it is difficult to believe that Shōtoku was beguiled by him. |
